- Used to signal when the boat is at mooring or at anchor
- Mandatory onboard equipment from within 1 mile to unlimited distance from the coast, according to DM No. 133 (21/09/2024)
- If the vessel is not under command, two balls must be hoisted vertically
- Also used to indicate boats that are ungoverned, beached or grounded, or in dangerous situations (in combination with any square flag)
